You could try just exporting the whole thing to fbx and see how it goes importing it to UE4 and decide whether or not it's fast enough to you. As long as you have material slots properly assigned it should work OK, although you'll lose some of the flexibility you might have had by building the thing in UE4 in the first place.
Yeah, managing materials in 3ds Max could be more simple. Fortunately, the 2011 version is a little bit easier to use.
